The interferon antagonist and growth promoter Sarcolectin has affinity for negatively charged carbohydrates.
The major cellular sarcolectin binding protein in human placenta has been found to be identical with human macrophage migration inhibitory factor, MMIF (see: MIF, migration inhibition factor). The sarcolectin binding protein reduces macrophage migration at a concentration of 100 ng/mL in MIF assays. Recombinant migration inhibitory factor (see also: Recombinant cytokines) and purified sarcolectin binding protein react equally well with anti-MIF antibodies in immunoblot analyses.
