This protein is encoded in the genome of Simian virus 5, a prototype of the paramyxoviruses. Similar proteins are found conserved among all paramyxoviruses (Sun et al, 2004).
SV5 V protein blocks antiviral responses mediated by interferons by causing degradation of STAT1 and by preventing the production of interferons by blocking the nuclear import of IRF3. An anti-apoptotic function of SV5 V protein is suggested by the observation that mutants lacking the N-terminal region conserved among V proteins causes cell death by apoptosis, which is prevented by wild-type SV5 V protein. Cell death by apoptosis involves caspase-12.
