This protein is encoded by Simian virus SV40. T antigen is a known inactovator of tumor suppressor proteins and has been used extensively to study the mechanisms of cellular growth control and transformation. Expression of this antigen in transformed cells has been used to generate immortalized cell lines.
T antigen has been shown to blocks cell death by apoptosis. It prevents apoptosis independently of the activation of the p53 tumor suppressor protein (Conzen et al, 1997).
