[SUN domains]
[Sad1-UNC-84 homology domain] This protein domain is conserved in a number of nuclear envelope proteins involved in nuclear migration, meiotic telomere tethering, and antiviral responses. Proteins containing a SUN domain connect the nucleoskeleton to every major cytoskeleton network by forming complexes with proteins containing a KASH domain.
These protein complexes are required also for attaching centrosomes to the nuclear periphery and for alignment of homologous chromosomes, their pairing and recombination in meiosis. Other functions that require SUN domain proteins include the regulation of apoptosis and maturation and survival of the germline (Fridkin et al, 2009; Tzur et al, 2006).
