[STAP cell]
STAP (a term with multiple meanings) is the acronym for stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency. STAP cells are mammalian somatic cells that have acquired pluripotent characters after simple short-term exposure to strong external stimuli such as a transient low-pH. This technique does not require nuclear transfer or genetic manipulation involving the introduction of transcription factors (see also: iPS cells [induced pluripotent stem cells]). STAP cells are derived from purified lymphocytes by reprogramming rather than selection (Obokata et al, 2014). STAP cells show a substantial decrease in DNA methylation in the regulatory regions of pluripotency
