[spinster homolog 2] This is a human homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster gene spinster. Kawahara et al (2009) have reported that SPNS2 acts as a transporter for Sphingosine-1-phosphate and regulates the migration of myocardial precursors. In knock-out zebrafish the absence of SPNS2 leads to cardiac bifida. This defect can be rescued by injection of Sphingosine-1-phosphate but not by introduction of the second spinster homolog, HSpin1. Hisano et al (2013) have reported that a cooperation between SPNS2, the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 1PR1, and fibronectin is involved in the regulation of both cardiac and lower jaw development in zebrafish.
