[spermatogenesis-associated 17] This gene has been identified originally as MSRG-11 and shown to be able to accelerate apoptosis (Deng et al, 2005). Deng Y et al (2006) have reported abundant expression of SPATA17 protein in the cytoplasm of round spermatids and elongating spermatids within seminiferous tubules of the adult testis. Expression in cultured mouse spermatogonia (GC-1) cells accelerates apoptosis.
Nie et al (2013) have generated transgenic mice that express human SPATA17 specifically in spermatocytes
