[spindle-shaped N-cadherin(+) CD45(-) osteoblastic cells] These cells have been identified in the bone marrow by Zhang et al (2003). They express N-cadherin and do not express CD45. The cells resemble osteoblasts but are probably different from cuboidal (active) osteoblasts that line the bone surface. An increase in the number of SNO cells has been shown to correlate with an increase in the number of hematopoietic stem cells, which are found to attach to SNO cells. SNO cells numbers are increased in mice conditionally deficient for the expression of the bone morphogenetic receptor BMPR1A, and SNO cells are thought to function as support cells forsubpopulations of
