[smooth monostratified ganglion cells; also: smooth monostratified cells] SM cell (Crook et al, 2008). SM cells are a type of retinal ganglion cells (neurons) that resemble Y cells in their responses. They are distinguished from parasol cells by smaller cell body and axon diameters but approximately 2 times larger dendritic tree and receptive field diameters that form a regular but lower density mosaic organization. The authors have suggested that the smooth monostratified cells and parasol cell populations may sample a common presynaptic circuitry but give rise to distinct, parallel achromatic spatial channels in the primate retinogeniculate pathway.
