[sialic acid binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 9] This protein is a member of a family of type 1 transmembrane proteins. They are cell surface lectins that have the ability to bind to sialic acids and mediate interactions between proteins and carbohydrates (see also: SIGLECs). SIGLEC-9 binds to alpha-2-3- and alpha-2-6-linked sialic acids (Angata and Varki, 2000). Several studies describing the sialoside specificities of individual SIGLECs have been reported (Blixt et al, 2003; Rapoport et al, 2006).
The SIGLEC-9 protein (463 amino acids) is closely related to SIGLEC-7 (Zhang et al, 2000). SIGLEC-9 shows a high degree of homology to many members of the siglec family, including SIGLEC-7 (80 %), SIGLEC-8 (72 %), SIGLEC-5 (65 %), and CD33
