[secreted hominoid-specific oncogene] SHON is a secreted hominoid-specific protein identified by Jung Y et al (2013) as an estrogen-regulated gene in breast cancer. Enforced expression of SHON in breast cancer cells increases their proliferation, survival, migration, and invasion in vitro and enhances the oncogenicity of these cells when xenografted into immunocompromised mice. SHON is sufficient to transform MCF10A human mammary epithelial cells. Attenuation of SHON expression reduces the oncogenicity of breast cancer cells.
