[Myxomavirus SERP2; Myxomavirus Serine proteinase inhibitor 2] This protein of 34 kDa is encoded by myxoma virus DNA. It was selected out of an in vitro transcription translation system due to its strong reactivity with virus antiserum (Petit et al, 1996). SERP2 shows strong homologies to members of the serpin superfamily of proteins and is related closely to crmA. The gene is deleted in an attenuated viral strain. SERP2 can inhibit human IL1-beta Convertase (caspase-1) and granzyme B (Messud-Petit et al, 1998; Turner et al, 1999). The protein interferes with inflammation and cell death by apoptosis.
