SCO-spondin is a large multidomain glycoprotein (Gonçalves-Mendes et al, 2003) secreted by cells of the subcommissural organ (SCO), an ependymal derivative in the roof of the third ventricle. This specialized neuroepithelium located at the dorsal midline underneath the posterior commissure is composed of radial glial cells contacting the cerebrospinal fluid and connecting also to the pial membrane (Rodríguez et al, 1992, 1998). SCO-spondin is evolutionarily conserved in the central nervous system of the chordate phylum (Gobron S et al, 1999), and the complex multidomain organization of SCO-spondin protein is highly conserved in mammals (Meiniel and Meiniel, 2007.
