Johnston et al (1990) have cloned the cDNA from a rat brain expression library, using a mixed polyclonal antibody directed against synaptic junction glycoproteins. SC-1 is an integral membrane glycoprotein of 100 kDa uniquely and transiently expressed on spinal cord motoneurons early in chicken development. It appears in peripheral neurons and several other tissues during development. SC-1 is a cell adhesion protein that allows cell-to-cell contacts by homophilic interactions (Tanaka et al, 1991). Pollerberg and Mack (1994) have reported that the protein mediates axonal elongation of SC-1 positive axons on such axons, thereby possibly contributing to the pathway and target finding mechanisms of far-projecting, tract-forming central nervous system neurons
