[SARS-CoV Spike glycoprotein; SARS coronavirus S protein; SARS-CoV S protein; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus S protein; CoV S protein]
This glycoprotein encoded in the genome of SARS coronavirus is a structural envelope protein. SARS-CoV Spike protein is a homotrimer (De Groot et al, 1987; Delmas and Laude, 1990) providing the spike projecting from the virion surface. Proteolytic cleavage of the spike protein precursor by a host cell protease generates two noncovalently bound subunits, an N-terminal S1 subunit and a C-terminal S2 subunits (Frana et al, 1985; Luytjes et al, 1987; Schmidt et al, 1987) in the late stage of virus maturation (Niemann et al, 1982; Frana et al, 1985; Sturman et al, 1985).
