SARS coronavirus N protein is a nucleocapsid protein that gives rise to a strong antibody response in SARS patients. Cheng et al (2005) have reported crossreactivity between antibodies directed against the N protein and IL11, an anti-inflammatory cytokine derived from bone marrow stroma cells. In a neutralization assay, STAT3 phosphorylation induced by IL11 in the rat intestinal epithelial IEC-18 cells is suppressed completely by an antibody directed against the nucleocapsid protein. Nucleocapsid antibodies thus may modulate IL11 activities and virus infection.
