SARS coronavirus E protein, a small envelope protein, has been shown to induce cell death by apoptosis in the absence of growth factors. Apoptosis is inhibited by overexpression of the anti-apoptotic protein BCLxL. E protein interacts with BCLxL in vitro and endogenous BCLxL in vivo through the BH3 domain of BCLxL and a BH3-like region located in the C-terminal cytosolic domain of E protein. Thus, E protein can cause T-cell apoptosis, which may contribute to the SARS coronavirus-induced lymphopenia observed in most SARS patients.
