[Rotavirus NSP4] This protein is encoded in the genome of rotavirus. Rotavirus NSP4 is a viral enterotoxin and has been shown to induce diarrhea in young mice (Ball et al, 1996). Ousingsawat et al (2011) have reported that Rotavirus NSP4 induces diarrhea by activation of TMEM16A and inhibition of Na+ absorption by the epithelial Na+ channel ENaC and the Na+ /glucose cotransporter SGLT1.
Rotavirus NSP4 causes leakage of endoplasmic reticulum luminal calcium into the cytosol. This is thought to affect the normal activity of its protein folding machinery, thereby causing ER stress (Hyser et al, 2010).
