Rinderpest virus P protein |
Ring1 and YY1 binding protein |

This nonstructural protein is encoded by Rinderpest virus (RPV), a paramyxovirus closely related to the human pathogen Measles virus. The protein is a virulence factor as its deletion causes specific defects in growth and transcription of viral RNAs (Baron and Barrett, 2000). The protein contributes to immune evasion. It binds to the signal transducer STAT1 and prevents the action of both type 1 interferon (IFN-alpha) and type 2 interferon (IFN-gamma) (Nanda and Baron, 2006).
