The authors have proposed the name retinal pigment epithelial protective protein (abbr. RPP) for this factor.
This biochemically uncharacterized protein (69/75 kDa) is secreted by intact retinal pigment epithelial cells, but not by fibroblasts, corneal epithelial cells, or intact choroidal tissues. The protein is not cytotoxic to the neutrophils. It inhibits the production of superoxide by activated neutrophils in vitro and may be involved in limiting tissue injury during inflammation.
