[Renshaw cell]
a specialized kind of neuron (interneuron) in the spinal cord that communicates with motoneurons and inhibits their activities (Windhorst, 1990).
Renshaw cells, together with Ia inhibitory interneurons that mediate reciprocal inhibition, derive from V1 interneurons (Alvarez et al, 2005; Benito-Gonzalez and Alvarez, 2012). Adult Renshaw cells mediate recurrent inhibition of homonymous and synergistic motoneurons and receive strong excitatory drive from recurrent collaterals of motor axons (for overview see: Alvarez and Fyffe, 2007).
