This term refers to CD56(bright) NK-cells, a subset of NK-cells identified by high expression of the marker CD56. CD56(bright) NK-cells constitute a small percentage (5-10 %) of the circulating NK-cell population, whereas CD56(dim) NK-cells constitute the major subset (90 %) (Ferlazzo, 2008).
Cooper et al (2001) have shown that CD56(bright) NK-cells are immunoregulatory NK-cells with limited cytotoxicity but the ability to secrete large amounts of cytokines upon stimulation, suggesting that this subset of NK-cells may have a unique functional role in innate immune responses.
