These cells have been described by Sundaram et al (2004). They are small mononuclear cells with extended mitotic life span that arise from multinucleate and polyploid giant cells before these cells die as senescent cells of apoptosis or mitotic catastrophe. Multinucleate and polyploid giant cells themselves, called neosis mother cells by the authors, are obtained after exposure of a mouse embryonic fibroblast cell line (C3H10T1/2) to genotoxic agents such as etoposide and radiation as the result of atypical karyokinesis and a novel type of cell division that the authors have termed neosis.
