This protein is encoded by nonpathogenic strains of Rabies virus. Glycoprotein G of Rabies virus is a homotrimeric integral membrane protein that forms spikes at the viral surface and mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with the endosomal membrane (Gaudin et al, 1992; Whitt et al, 1991). The protein has been shown to be the only viral protein with the ability to induce cell death by apoptosis in human cells (Lay et al, 2003).
