[Rift Valley fever virus NSm protein] The NSm protein is a nonstructural protein encoded in the genome of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), a mosquito-transmitted bunyavirus (genus Phlebovirus) associated with severe disease in livestock and fatal encephalitis or haemorrhagic fever in a proportion of infected humans. The protein is dispensable for maturation, replication and infection (Won et al, 2006; Gerrard et al, 2007) but may play a role in mosquito infection as its deletion reduces the infection and transmission potential of the virus (Crabtree et al, 2012).
Won et al (2007) have shown that NSm suppresses virus-induced cell death by apoptosis in virus-infected cells. NSm protein expression inhibits the staurosporine-induced activation of caspase-8
