[retinoic acid-inducible heparin binding protein] This highly basic protein of 121 amino acids is isolated from chick embryos where it is expressed during early chick embryogenesis. The expression of RIHB is induced strongly by retinoic acid (Raulias et al, 1991; Vigny et al, 1989; Cockshutt et al, 1993).
RIHB is derived from a larger precursor protein by removal of a signal sequence of 21 amino acids. The protein contains 31 lysine and arginine residues and 10 cysteine residues. The sequence has 64 % homology at the protein level with murine MK (midkine) and also considerable homology with HBNF (heparin binding neurite-promoting factor) (Urios et al, 1991).
