[Pseudogene RNA]
Pseudogene RNAs are the transcripts derived from pseudogenes, which are ubiquitous and abundant in genomes and were long regarded as genomic fossils or junk DNA because, unlike the parent gene from which they were derived in processed or unprocessed forms by rearrangement, duplication, and/or mutation, they have lost their protein-coding functions (for overview see: Tutar, 2012; Pink et al, 2011). Pseudogenes, which often still contain introns, are now thought to play regulatory roles because their transcripts can give rise to microRNAs or short interfering RNAs that can influence the parent gene as well as many other genes.
