Pouterin

Pouterin is a 14 kDa protein from the seeds of Pouteria torta (family Sapotaceae) (Boleti et al, 2007). The protein possesses lectin-like activity, which is inhibited by glycoproteins such as fetuin, asialofetuin, heparin, orosomucoid, and ovoalbumin. Pouterin inhibits the growth of the fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Colletotrichum musae and of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The incorporation of pouterin into an artificial diet caused 5 0% mortality in larvae of the insect Callosobruchus maculatus.

Boleti et al (2008) have reported that Pouterin is highly cytotoxic for HeLa, Hep-2 and HT-29 tumor cell lines, which are killed by cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, whereas non-tumorigenic Vero cells and human peripheral blood ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
