[Plaque-associated microglial cells]
abbr. PAMs. This term pertains to a population of microglial cells found in the brains of human Alzheimer's disease patients where they are associated with senile plaques that are foci of local inflammation mediated by these cells (Haga et al, 1989; Itagaki et al, 1989). Their relationship to other types of microglial cells found in association with neurodegeneration has not been established (for overview see: Hashemiaghdam and Mroczek, 2020). Although the exact relationship is not clear, for comparison see also: Dark microglia, disease-associated microglia, Human Alzheimer’s microglia.
