abbr. piRNAs [P-element-induced wimpy testis-interacting small RNAs] These small non-coding RNAs of 26-31 nucleotides constitute the largest class small non-coding RNAs (Aravin et al, 2006; Kirino and Mourelatos, 2006); conservative estimates in some reviews put their numbers to 20,000-100,000. piRNAs are slightly longer than microRNAs and small interfering RNAs.
