This cell type constitutes a distinct class of glial cells found in the nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster and other insects. The cells are a component of the blood-brain barrier (see also: Subperineurial glial cells) (for overview see: Yildirim et al, 2019). Perineurial glial cells participate in nutrient uptake and establish a first diffusion barrier (for overview see: Limmer et al, 2014). Perineurial glial cells are situated just underneath the neural lamella, a thick extracellular matrix covering the nervous system and secrete proteases to remodel this matrix (Meyer et al, 2014). On the first day of metamorphosis Perineurial glial cells undergo significant proliferation, and contribute to 95 % of the glial cell population at that stage (Subramanian et al, 2017).
