[Pen alloantigens]
This antigen is expressed specifically on platelets and has been associated with neonatal alloimmune throbocytopecic purpura (Furihata et al, 1987). The antigen exists in two allelic variants, termed Pen(a) and Pen(b), which differ from each other by a single amino acid substitution (Arg-143 in Pen(a) to Gln-143 in Pen(b)) (Wang et al, 1992). The alloantigen is found on platelet glycoprotein IIIa (GP3A). In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD61.
