[Paraganglionic cell]
This general term refers to clusters of extra-adrenal chromaffin cells localised along the autonomic nervous system (Böck, 1982). The cells contain catecholamines in high concentrations (hence the term catecholamine-storing cells; see, for example Hervonen et al, 1976). These cells are neuroendocrine cells and share structural, functional, and metabolic features with peripheral and central neurons, serving as sensor cells and have been referred to as paraneurons, paraneuronal cells, or receptosecretory cells (Hervonen et al, 1978; Fujita, 1989; Kanno, 1989).
