This protein has been discovered in human and bovine pancreatic secretions (Gross et al, 1985). The name derives from its ability to form oligomeric insoluble fibrillar structures at a neutral pH. The protein has been renamed Lithostathine (Sarles et al, 1990) and is identical to the protein encoded by the REG gene. Zenilman et al (1996) have shown that the protein is mitogenic to pancreatic-derived cells in culture.
