[Phox homology domain] This phosphatidylinositol binding domain of approximately 120 amino acids (Ago et al, 2001; Ellson et al, 2002) has been identified originally in the NADPH oxidase subunits, p47phox, a key cytosolic subunit required for activation of NADPH oxidase in neutrophils (Xu et al, 2001).
The domain has been conserved from yeast to humans and has been found in more than 100 proteins. It acts as a membrane targeting domain. The PX domain contains a conserved proline-rich sequence motif and has been identified in a wide variety of proteins involved in cell signaling, protein sorting, vesicle fusion, and the assembly of components of the superoxide generating system of
