The PH-30 antigen is detected by a monoclonal antibody of the same name expressed on guinea pig sperm surfaces (Primakoff et al, 1987). The protein is involved in sperm-egg plasma membrane fusion during fertilization. It consists of two polypeptide chains, termed PH-30-alpha and PH-30-beta, which have been renamed Fertilin-alpha (abbr. FTNA) and Fertilin-beta (abbr. FTNB). Both proteins are synthesized in the testis as larger precursors, which are processed by proteolysis (Blobel et al, 1990). Heterodimerization between these two proteins requires a third protein, termed Calmegin (Ikawa et al, 2001).
