Osteoclast differentiation factor
abbr. ODF. The gene for this factor was identified in a cDNA library of mouse stromal cells. The protein induces the formation of osteoclast-like cells from osteoclast progenitors (Yasuda et al, 1998).
This factor is identical with the ligand for Osteoprotegerin, which is identical with TRANCE and RANKL. Based on homology with other members of the TNF ligand protein superfamily these proteins are referred to also as TNF ligand superfamily member 11 [TNFSF11].
