In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD36.
OKM5 is the name of a monoclonal antibody recognizing a 88 kDa membrane protein on monocytes (Talle et al, 1983). OKM5 also reacts with platelets, endothelial cells, and certain tumor cells, and the target antigen has been identified as CD36. McGregor et al (1989) have used OKM5 to purify and characterize the platelet proteins GPIIIb (which is an older designation for GP4 [platelet glycoprotein 4]). Asch et al (1987) have reported that OKM5 reacts with the thrombospondin receptor.
