[Niemann-Pick cell]
Niemann-Pick cells are macrophages from Niemann-Pick disease, a deficiency of sphingomyelinase that causes the accumulation of sphingomyelin in the macrophage-monocyte phagocyte lineage. Lipid-laden macrophages in Niemann-Pick disease are found in the marrow and identified histologically as sea-blue histiocytes. These macrophages have been shown express Tartrate-resistant acid ATPase (Sharma et al, 2009), which is known in older publications as mammalian purple acid phosphatase or Tartrate-resistant purple acid phosphatase (see also: uteroferrin).
