abbr. also NT endopeptidase. This enzyme is known also as endopeptidase 24.16 (EC3.4.24.16) or neurotensin-degrading endopeptidase, neurotensin-degrading enzyme. The approved name is neurolysin (approved gene symbol: NLN).
This metalloendopeptidase has been isolated from rat brain synaptic membranes by Checler et al (1986). The enzyme cleaves neurotensin at Pro10-Tyr11 and produces biologically inactive fragments neurotensin-(1-10) and neurotensin-(11-13). Barelli et al (1988) have shown that the enzyme is not an exclusive neurotensinase since, in addition to the neurotensin natural analogs neuromedin N and xenopsin, non-related natural
