abbr. NPN-1, NP-1, NRP1 (approved gene symbol). Neuropilin is known also as A5-antigen and has been identified independently as BDCA4 [Blood dendritic cell antigen 4]. It is a cell surface glycoprotein first identified in the neurons of the visual system and general somatic sensory system of Xenopus laevis and then in chicken and mouse. The primary structure of neuropilin is highly conserved among these vertebrate species. The neuropilin-1 gene consist of 17 exons and gives rise to various alternatively spliced protein isoforms (Tao et al, 2003).
