This neuropeptide, FLEPPERPAVFTSVEQMKSYIKALNDYYLLLGRPRFamide, has been isolated from salivary glands of the leech Haemadipsa sylvestris (Liu et al, 2016). The peptide shows significant inhibitory effects on the production of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL6, and chemokine MCP-1. It is thought that its presence in leech salivary gland may help get blood meal from hosts and inhibit inflammation.
