abbr. NPF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor is isolated from muscle tissues. It induces the outgrowth of neurites in embryonic neurons (Jeong et al, 1991). The factor is also a survival factor for cultured motor neurons and sensory and sympathetic neurons.
Another factor, also being referred to as NPF, has been shown to be the same as MIF [macrophage migration inhibitory factor] (see: otocyst-derived factor).
