abbr. NAP. This protein of 55 kDa is found in the conditioned medium of Schwann cells and Schwannoma cultures. It completely inhibits proliferation of Schwann cells but not proliferation of immortalized and transformed Schwann cells and thus functions as an autocrine proliferation inhibitor (Muir et al, 1990).
The action of the antiproliferative protein is probably indirect. The 55 kDa protein has been found to possess metalloproteinase activity and stromelysin immunoreactivity, sharing many properties with stromelysin isolated from other sources, including the ability to cleave fibronectin.
