The Caenorhabditis elegans gene NUC-1 encodes a cell death related nucleases that is responsible, together with other nucleases for the degradation of DNA in cells undergoing apoptosis. The NUC-1 is an acidic nuclease with significant sequence similarity to mammalian DNase 2 and it has been assumed that DNase 2 is the mammalian homolog of NUC-1 (Lyon et al, 2000; Wu et al, 2000). Wu et al (2000) have reported that NUC-1 functions in an intermediate step of DNA degradation during apoptosis and that the process of DNA degradation of the DNA of a cell corpse occurs in at least three distinct steps.
