two proteins isolated from central nervous system myelin with molecular weights of 35 and 250 kDa, respectively (Caroni and Schwab, 1988). The two proteins show potent neurite growth inhibitory activity (Caroni and Schwab, 1988; Bandtlow et al, 1993). The two proteins are identified as IN-1 antigen and thus are molecular forms of Nogo.
The two proteins are powerful inhibitors of axon regeneration. Treatment of lesioned nerve fiber tracts with a neutralizing antibody in adult rats causes long distance growth of regenerating fibers in the CNS (Weibel et al, 1994; Schn ell and Schwab, 1990; Cadelli and Schwab, 1991; Schnell et al, 1994; Bartsch et al, 1995) and allows recovery of specific reflex and locomotor functions after spinal cord injury (Bregman et al, 1995).
