This collective term refers to a number of evolutionarily conserved neuropeptides initially discovered in locusts and mainly studied in insects (Schoofs et al, 1991; Šimo et al, 2009; Šimo and Park, 2014; Kim et al, 2010; Poels et al, 2010; Nässel and Winther, 2010). The name reflects the ability of these peptides to inhibit spontaneous muscle contractions of insect gut and oviduct preparations.
