Migration stimulating factor
abbr. MSF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor is secreted by human fetal but not adult fibroblasts and mammary carcinoma cells. The factor is found also in the serum of breast cancer patients (Picardo et al, 1991). MSF is expressed by tumor-associated fibroblasts and also by carcinoma cells and tumor-associated vascular endothelial cells (Schor et al, 2003).
MSF is a proline-rich protein of approximately 70 kDa (Grey et al, 1989; Schor et al, 1988). The protein binds to heparin and this may be important for its in vivo activities (see also: HBGF, heparin binding growth factors). The N-terminal 70 kDa region of Fibronectin
