[Meynert cell]
called also solitary cells of Meynert. These are specialized large neurons found in various areas of the cerebral cortex (Winfield et al, 1981) and in many different species (Sherwood et al, 2003). The cells have extensive intrinsic collaterals spreading over a large distance (Li et al, 2003). They connect to a distant cortical and a subcortical structure (Fries et al, 1985).
Meynert cells are found in the visual cortex of primates (Chan-Palay et al, 1974). Li et al (2003) have suggested that Meynert cells in the primary visual cortex may be involved in binocular interactions over wide sectors of the visual field and that their function may be related to processes such as optic flow or contour completion or interpolation.
