The cells are being referred to also as Merkel-Ranvier cells (Arnulf et al, 1983; Winkelmann, 1982), described originally as Tastzellen (English: touch cells) by Merkel (1875).
Merkel cells were thought to be derived from neural crest cells (Szeder et al, 2003). Van Keymeulen et al (2009) have reported that these cells are not derived from neural crest cells. They arise through the differentiation of epidermal progenitor cells during embryonic development. In adults, Merkel cells undergo slow turnover and are replaced by cells originating from epidermal stem cells, not through proliferation of differentiated Merkel cells.
